Effective Prayers that Resonate

The concept of "effective, fervent prayer" is highlighted in James 5:16, which states, "The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avail much". This verse emphasizes the power and impact of earnest, passionate prayer offered by a righteous individual. It suggests that when prayer is offered with sincerity, intensity, and a righteous heart, it can achieve significant results. Here's a breakdown of the key elements:

  • EFFECTIVE:
This refers to the prayer's power to produce results, to be efficacious. It implies a prayer that is not passive but actively engaged and potentially transformative.

  • FERVENT:
This describes the intensity and passion with which the prayer is offered. It's not a lukewarm or casual approach, but rather a sincere and heartfelt plea to God.

  • RIGHTEOUS MAN:
This highlights the character of the one praying. It implies a person who is living in accordance with God's will and has a relationship with Him. In essence, "effective, fervent prayer" is a powerful form of communication with God that is characterized by sincerity, intensity, and a righteous heart. It's a prayer that can move mountains, impact lives, and bring about positive change.

Our Mission
We believe we need to walk in total dependence on God,  for His provision, direction and connections with others.  Growth will require continued seeking of His will, His way, and the Word demonstrated by a lifestyle of humility and faith in action, placing hope, faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Luke 11:9-10 Jesus says "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened."

To effectively pray using the Bible, one can incorporate Scripture into their prayers by reading, reflecting on, and personalizing passages, particularly those related to God's character, promises, or commands. This practice can deepen one's understanding of God and strengthen their faith, deepen your relationship with God, strengthen your faith, and experience the power and effectiveness of prayer, leading to more meaningful and impactful prayers.

How to pray using scripture

Choose a Passage: Select a passage that speaks to your current situation, a particular area of need, or a desire for a deeper understanding of God. We are privileged to live in the modern era of technology. If you are struggling to find a scripture, just Google for a scripture related the person or need. Read and Reflect: Read the passage slowly, perhaps multiple times, and reflect on the meaning of the words. Personalize the Prayer: Take the words of the passage and make them your own, applying them to your own life and circumstances. Pray with Faith: Pray with a believing heart, trusting that God hears and will answer according to His will.

Examples of Praying with Scripture

Confession: If you are struggling with sin, you can pray Psalm 51, confessing your need for forgiveness and cleansing. Guidance: If you need wisdom and direction, pray Psalm 25:4-5, asking God to guide you in His truth. Thanksgiving: If you are thankful for God's blessings, you can pray Psalm 103, praising Him for His goodness and mercy. Intercession: If you are praying for others, you can use passages like Ephesians 1:17-19 to pray for their spiritual growth and understanding. Specific Needs: If you are facing a difficult situation, you can pray Psalm 23, trusting in God's presence and provision.

Effective Prayer is More Than Just Words

Sincerity: Praying with a sincere and humble heart is crucial for effective prayer. Having the confidence that God hears you prayers is really important. Don't place your confidence in feelings, place your confidence in the Word of God. Psalm 50 verse 15 says - and God Himself speaking: "Call upon Me in the day of trouble, I will deliver you and you shall give me Glory." Faith: Believing that God hears and will answer according to His will is essential for effective prayer. The WILL of God is found in John 6 verse 40, out of the very mouth of Jesus: "And this is the will of Him who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day." The will of God is for you to believe and trust in the Jesus, putting you faith and hope in Him, recognising Him as the Son of God, the One who shed His innocent Blood on the Cross for you. Obedience: Living in accordance with God's Word demonstrates a heart that desires to please Him. Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” LOVE GOD and LOVE PEOPLE. By loving God you would want to live an obedient life centred on His Word. By loving people, you would see everyone joyful, blessed, happy and health, even your enemies. Perseverance: Continue to pray, even when you don't see immediate answers, trusting that God is working in His own time and way.

Cultivate a Relationship with the God:

Recognize God's Presence: Prayer is a conversation with the God, so approach it with awareness of the Holy Spirit's presence. This can be done by acknowledging the Holy Spirit's attributes, like His love, power, or wisdom, and expressing gratitude for His blessings. John 14 verse 26 reads: "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you." Openness and Honesty: Be honest and vulnerable in your prayers. Share your struggles, fears, and desires with Jesus, just as you would with a trusted friend. Psalm 88:13 reads, "But to You I have cried out, O Lord, and in the morning my prayer comes before You." Again in Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus says, "Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." Listen and Reflect: Prayer is not just about speaking, but also about listening. Spend time in quiet reflection, waiting for the Holy Spirit's guidance and promptings. In John 16:13 Jesus says: "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come."

Specific Steps for Effective Prayer:

Pray Specifically: Instead of vague requests, be specific about your needs and desires. Get a pen and notepad and write down the date with your prayer requests. This helps you focus your prayers and allows you to clearly recognize God's answers. Ask for Forgiveness: Confess your sins and shortcomings, seeking God's forgiveness and cleansing. This act of humility is crucial for a healthy prayer life. 1 John 1 verse 9 says: "if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness." Give Thanks: Express gratitude for God's blessings, both big and small. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude shifts your focus from what you lack to what you have, and opens you up to receive more. Pray with Faith and Expectation: Believe that God hears your prayers and will answer them according to His will. 1 John 5:14 and 15 says "And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask any thing according to His will, hears us: And if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him." Don't let doubt or negativity hinder your prayers. Pray with Persistence: Don't give up easily. Continue praying, even when you don't see immediate results. God's timing is perfect, and He may be working behind the scenes. Philippians 4:6-7 says "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Pray for Others: Extend your prayers to include your loved ones, your community, and even your enemies. This expands your focus beyond yourself and allows you to be a channel of God's love and compassion. Write the person's name in your notepad. Next to his/her name, find a scripture which you would want to pray over that person. If you don't know what scripture to use, Google a scripture: ie a scripture to pray over my abusive husband, lost son, drug addict daughter, violent community etc.

Tips for a Deeper Prayer Life:

Create a Dedicated Prayer Space: Find a quiet and comfortable place where you can focus without distractions. This can be challenging at times, but for your to have an effective prayer life you need to seek out a place where it is just you and God. Establish a Prayer Routine: Consistency is key. Set aside specific times for prayer each day or week. It might start out with just a few minutes at first but as you add family, friends, concerns, worries, places, church, your town and country, and attached a scripture to each of these areas, you will find that your prayer time becomes quite long. But at the end, you will feel the complete satisfaction of meeting with the Most High God, feeling confident of His peace and tranquillity through the day, having confidence He has heard and answered your prayers. Use Scripture in Prayer: Incorporate verses from the Bible into your prayers, using them as a guide and inspiration. Praying the Word of God can be powerful and transformative. Praying the Word is key to an effective fervent prayer. When you quote a verse over a person, place or situation, you are speaking the written Word, God's Word, the promises of God, over the situation. Keep a Prayer Journal: Writing down your prayers and God's responses can be a helpful way to track your prayer life and see how God is working in your life. Pray with Others: Find a prayer partner or group to pray with. Sharing your prayers and supporting each other can strengthen your faith and deepen your connection with God.
